Hello TAC Tigers,

I graduated from ERHS in 1990, went on to OCC, University of Illinois, and then on to EIU for a teaching certificate. Like many of us, I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't been blessed with parents who never allowed me the option of NOT going to college. So many parents have those same dreams for their children, but aren't sure where the money will come from to make that happen.

Being a member of the TPAA board of directors has been such an eye-opening experience. Like all teachers, I've always had students who I knew had the skills, intelligence and abilities to excel in college, but whose life experiences and situations might keep them from attempting to further their education. That can be a frustrating and helpless feeling; so it is refreshing to see the support that is out there for our schools and our students. Richland County Schools are fortunate to have so many "cheerleaders" on our side.

As the end of our scholarship drive draws near, I want to encourage everyone who was blessed with a great education to consider helping this new generation of students. They will be our doctors, nurses, business associates, and caretakers. Please consider donating to TPAA so we can help them be as prepared for the future as they can be. Whether you raised them or not, they are all OUR children. They've worked hard to get this far; please help them take the next step!

New Section on TAC: Noble

Click on the above title to visit a new section on TAC that I hope will welcome WRHS alumni to a place with us here at TAC.

For some time now I've wanted to have something here on TAC to let WRHS alumni know that we wish them well!

What to do?  First, Welcome to this corner of TAC!

Springtime!

The vernal equinox just passed us!  Last Wednesday, March 20, both the Northern and Southern hemispheres experienced an equal amount of daylight. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it marks the beginning of spring, with daylight hours continuing to lengthen until the summer solstice in June.

Wobbling Earth

The equinox, the seasons, and the changing length of daylight hours throughout the year are all due to one fact: The Earth wobbles in spins on a tilted axis.

It’s what gives us climate variety.

Ok!  Ok! My BAD!  The above is a basketball, not the earth.  But the idea of wobbling is pictured.   My excuse is that this is "March Maddness" --  "Sweet 16" time!

Happy Days! -- Fun Walking to School

Note: Below is a short, partial offering of a complete article of the same name posted on TAC under my stuff.  Click on the title above to read the whole article or on my picture below.

Walking to school was often the highlight of my day!  Until I was in junior high school, my parents rented and we moved often with the result that my route changed almost yearly.  My favorite walks were on a route from our home behind the old Olney Township High School on Main Street (now gone for over fifty years), near Mike’s Restaurant, to Silver Street elementary school (not used as a school since the early seventies):  Lots of pretty girls lived on both sides of that street.  I don't remember all the names; the ones I do remember were either future girl friends or cheerleaders.  Mostly the ‘co-eds' tried to avoid me. Rarely did one walk with me.  Why did I care?  I wonder if I sought girls as they were a mystery to me -- my not having sisters (at the time) and I was shy anyway and was pushing myself to engage those young ladies.

For some reason I remember getting a frog out of a creek and offering it to a young lady who was most decidedly not interested.

(Visit the full article to read about a surprise morning kiss.)

Thanks for your support of our scholarship drive!

Richard
