Nellie Ethel Harmon - Class Of 1913

Miss Nellie Ethel Harmon, 77, lifelong resident of Richland County, retired school teacher and one of Olney's grandest persons, died at her home, 903 East Cherry Street, last night, November 7, 1970, following a lengthy illness. She was most highly respected by many citizens of this area, and admired by her colleagues in the teaching profession.

Nellie was born near Claremont on April 10, 1893, daughter of Alexander and Ivy Alice Gardner, and lived in this county her entire life. She was very active and faithful as a member of the First United Methodist Church of Olney, and was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association. She attended the Olney schools and the Teacher's College in Carbondale.

Miss Harmon began her teaching career by teaching in two rural schools in this county, and then started teaching in the Olney Schools in 1916. She remained in the Olney school system until she retired in 1952.

She is survived by a brother, Reuben H. Harmon of Olney; a niece, Mrs. John (Mary Alice) Burgener of Olney, and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Funeral services in the Chapel of the Zirkle Mortuary with the Rev. V.A. Robinson officiating. Interment in Mt Pleasant Cemetery.
