Benton Bunn - Class Of 1914

William Benton Bunn, Jr., age 73, former resident of Richland County, passed away Saturday morning, January 11, 1967 in Lakeland, Florida where he had been a resident for the past ten years. He had been in ill health for a long period of time.

Mr. Bunn was born November 7, 1893 in Richland County Illinois, the son of William Benton Bunn, Sr. and Fannie (Bowers) Bunn. He married Ruth Winans and she passed away in 1946.  He later married Lucille Gove in 1947.

He was reared in Richland County, graduating from the Olney High School. He then graduated from the Eastern Illinois Teachers College and taught one year. Following this he attended the University of Illinois, graduating in 1920. His college training was interrupted by service in World War I.

He was one of Richland County's earliest farm advisers, spending his life as an agricultural extension agent, serving as assistant agent in Edgar and McDonough counties and as Farm Adviser in Richland, Pike and Champaign counties for 33 years. He retired in 1956 and moved to Lakeland where he became a real estate broker, as long as health permitted.

He was a member of the Farm House Fraternity, Epsilon Sigma Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta -- the last two being honorary fraternities. He was also the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the National County Agents Association. He was a member of the American Legion and of the Champaign Rotary Club. He was a life time member and active worker of the Methodist Church.

He leaves his wife, Lucille; daughters, Mrs. Russ Phillips, Mount Prospect; Mrs. John Jordan, Dayton, OH; brothers, Sam Bunn and Lee Bunn, both of Olney, and sister, Mrs. Gene Petty, of Sumner and several nieces and nephews.

A brother Benjamin Bunn preceded him in death.

Services in Summers-Rainey Funeral Home, Olney with burial in Haven Hill Cemetery.
