Levi M. Bailey - Class Of 1906

Levi Milton Bailey, 56, of Rock Island, Illinois, circulation manager of The Argus, died Sunday, March 19, 1944 in Moline Lutheran Hospital. Mr. Bailey had undergone an operation on March 8 and was apparently on the road to recovery before his sudden turn for the worse on Thursday. Death resulted from complications.

Mr. Bailey had been in newspaper circulation work since early youth, being employed by the Scripps-Howard Newspapers for many years. He came to The Argus from Dallas, Texas in November 1942.

A son of Windor Milton and Mary Inez Bailey, he was born September 16, 1887 in Evansville, Indiana. At an early age he moved with his parents to Olney, Illinois, where he was reared and educated. Soon after his graduation from high school, he started work in the circulation department of the Cincinnati Post. During his career he also was employed by newspapers at Evansville, Indiana, Kansas City, Missouri, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Louisville, Kentucky and Dallas, Texas. In 1926 he became circulation manager of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Gazette, and later of the former Waterloo Iowa Tribune.

He married Vivian Estelle Aiken on September 5, 1915 at Oklahoma City. Mr. Bailey was of Presbyterian faith. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and was active in organizing the Kiwanis Club in Oklahoma City.

Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. C.W. Richey, who resides at home while her husband is in submarine service in the South Pacific and Barbara Jean at home; a sister, Mrs. H.F. Godeke, Lubbock, TX; a brother, R.I. Bailey, White Plains, N.Y. and a grandchild.

His parents preceded him in death.

The body will remain at the Wheelan Funeral Home, the body will then be shipped to Olney, Illinois where funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon.
