Kenneth Scherer (Claremont Elem -6)

Kenneth Perkins Scherer, age 91, of Olney, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. Funeral service in the chapel of Thrasher Family Funeral Home with burial at Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney. Reverend Tim Loomis, Matt Johnson, and Richland County Veterans Association officiating.

Kenneth was born on January 6, 1924 in Richland County the son of Vernon L. and Mable (Perkins) Scherer.  He later married Mary I. McGookey on July 24, 1950 in Carbondale. She survives.

He worked as a teacher in the agriculture industry at East Richland Middle School, Dundas and Claremont in Richland County. He also taught at Industrial School for Boys in Golden, Colorado and Louisville, Colorado. He was medic in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Mt. Gilead Church in Olney. He was a member of a square dancing club, Elks, American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed square dancing, fishing and hunting, was a basketball coach and made jewelry out of silver. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

Kenneth is survived by wife Mary I. (McGookey) Scherer; two daughters, Barbara Bauman and husband Michael of Olney and Judith Scott and husband Donovan of Flora; two brothers Wendell Scherer of Peoria and Vernon and wife Betty Scherer of South Carolina; sister-in-law Marilyn Scherer of Cannon City, Colorado; three grandchildren Ben Bauman, Joshua Scott and Heather Scott; and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Mable Scherer and brother David Scherer.
