Helen Spelman (Central Elem -1)

Helen L. Spelman, 66, retired school teacher of 41 years and resident of 412 N. Boone St, passed away this morning, July 25, 1972, at the Richland Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

Miss Spelman was born August 4, 1905 in Du Quoin, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Edward and Elizabeth (Hough) Spelman.  Her family moved to Olney when she was 5 years old.  She was graduated from Olney High School and attended Eastern Illinois University and the National College of Education in Evanston, Ill.  Miss Spelman taught her first year at Taylor School south of Noble and the remaining 40 years at Central Grade School in Olney.

She was a member of the Illinois Education Association, National Education Association, State and National Retired Teacher Association and the East Richland Teachers Association.  Miss Spelman was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church and a very active volunteer for the Richland Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by four brothers, Everette of Denver, Colo., Howard of Pennsylvania, Lewis of Indianapolis, Ind. and Charles of New Mexico; one sister, Mrs. W. Steward (Evelyn) Williams of Springfield and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Arch.

Funeral services at the Zirkle Mortuary with Pastor David McNabb officiating. Interment in the Haven Hill Cemetery.
