George F. Cummins - Class Of 1912

Dr. George Fowler Cummins, 64, of Metropolis and Paducah, Kentucky, died Tuesday, April 29, 1958 in Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky. He had been ill for about a year, continuing to practice on a limited basis, during that time.

He was born in Van Buren, Arkansas on December 12, 1893, a son of Rev. Jeremiah S. and Nancy N. (Rice) Cummins. (Rev. J. S. Cummins was a former Olney Methodist minister, widely known over southern Illinois.)

Dr. Cummins had been coroner since 1944 and had practiced medicine in Massac County for 34 years.

Dr. Cummins attended McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois and did undergraduate work at Southern Illinois University before enrolling in Northwestern Medical School, Evanston, where he graduated in 1920.

Dr. Cummins was secretary and past president of the Massac County Medical Society and chairman of the Quandri-County Health Department. He was a local health officer for many years. He was a past president of the Metropolis Rotary Club, past president and honorary president of the Massac Memorial Hospital staff in Metropolis and was president of the school board for six years.

He was on staff of Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah and had served 25 years on the Illinois Central Railroad Hospital staff in Paducah. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Kappa Medical Fraternity, the McCracken County, Kentucky Medical Association and the Illinois State Medical Society. He was local surgeon of the Illinois Central & Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroads. Dr. Cummins devoted many years to Red Cross work, serving as chairman of the local chapter several terms. During World War II, Dr. Cummins was on the draft board and a participant in many other wartime activities.

He leaves his wife, Olga; a sister, Mrs. Joy Merlyn of Centralia; a brother, C.S. Cummins of St. Louis and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. R.A. Lippman, Pastor Metropolis First Methodist Church and the Rev. Fischer pastor of Broadway Methodist Church, Paducah, will officiate.
