Albert G. Parker - Class Of 1910

Madison, Indiana – Dr. Albert G. Parker, Jr. 61, president of Hanover College since 1929, died of a heart attack Saturday, March 22, 1958, six months before his retirement date. Ill of a respiratory infection for two weeks, he suffered a heart attack in his home at nearby Hanover and died 10 minutes after arriving at King’s Daughters Hospital in Madison.

He was to have retired in September after rebuilding the little Presbyterian College with 25 new buildings in a 7-million-dollar improvement program. Enrollment rose from 300 to 400 to a capacity of 750.

Dr. Parker was one of the early leaders in associated colleges of Indiana, an organization developing business and industrial support for privately owned colleges. With a frugal eye on administrative costs, he had at times doubled for such officials as the registrar, building superintendent and even as bookkeeper.

Dr. Parker was a graduate of Park College, Parkville, Mo. and McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago. He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in sociology at the University of Chicago in 1929 just before becoming Hanover President. He was an ordained Presbyterian minister.

Dr. Parker, is the son of the senior Rev. Albert G. and Jessie (Bewley) Parker, who pastored in Olney, Illinois from 1907-1912.

Survivors include the widow, Katherine McAfee Parker; son, Reverend Albert G. Parker III and two daughters, Mrs. William Tuck and Mrs. Charles Hanshaw.
