Elizabeth McWilliams (Miller) - Class Of 1919

Elizabeth (McWilliams) Miller, 92, a Dade County Health Department nurse, died Thursday, November 25, 1993 of pneumonia.

Miller was born July 29, 1901 in Olney, Ill., daughter of George B. and Flora C. (Brandt) McWilliams, and had been a resident of Dade County since 1934. She graduated from the Indiana University School of Nursing and became a public health nurse in Indiana and Washington, D.C.

She was also one of six founders of Sigma Theta Tau International Honorary Society of Nursing, where she received recognition over the years. In 1986, the organization recognized her on Founder's Day for her dedication. The Elizabeth McWilliams Miller Excellence in Research Award, given at the organization's biennial conventions, is named in her honor.

Miller was appointed to the National Committee on the Costs of Medical Care study, participating in planning and conducting field research in the southeastern United States.

Between 1945 and 1955, she was involved in relief nursing with the Dade County Health Department and the University of Miami infirmary.

"We're very proud of all of her accomplishments," her daughter Mary E. Miller said. "When the family would go with her to the conventions, everyone would just want to come and talk to her."

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by sons George M. Miller, Richard A. Miller and Rodney A. Miller, all of Dade County; sisters Helen McWilliams of Montana, Miriam Hooker of Connecticut, Nina Koomos of Texas and G.E.M. Beaird of Florida; brother Ned McWilliams of Arkansas; and three grandchildren.
