Claude Travers - Class Of 1924

Claude D. "Buck" Travers, 70, of 208 South Jasper Street, died Monday October 28, 1974 at the Richland Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.  Funeral services at Zirkle Funeral Home with Pastor Louis Frick officiating. Interment in Haven Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Travers was born October 24, 1904 in the Mt. Erie Community, the son of Lewis and Ida Mae Lynch Travers. He moved to Olney with his parents at the age of 14 and was graduated from the Olney Township High School. After attending post graduate schools, he moved to Lawrenceville and was employed by the Indian Refinery Co.

On December 24, 1929 he was united in marriage with Alice Coventry, who survives.  Two years after his marriage he returned to Olney and became involved in politics. Buck was elected as Richland Co. Circuit Clerk in 1936 and served two full terms. In 1944 he was elected as State Representative in the General Assembly and served six consecutive terms, retiring from politics in 1956. He had also been a real estate broker in Olney for 36 years prior to his final retirement in 1968. Buck was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church and Elks.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Gayle) Bratton of Frankfort, Ky.; four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Bechenhauer, Mrs. Mabel Franklin and Mrs. Ruth McBride all of Olney and Mrs. Jean Slothower of Dixon; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Travers was preceded in death by an infant daughter and three brothers.
