Bernard Morgan - Class Of 1967

Bernard Morgan

Bernard "Bernie" Morgan, 74, a beloved figure in the Casey community, passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023, in the comfort of his home. Born on January 24, 1949, in Olney, IL, the son of George & Helen (Halsey) Morgan, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, Brent Morgan. He was a man who held his small-town roots close to his heart and dedicated his life to the betterment of his community.

He married Karlette Sanders on June 21, 1975, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughters & sons-in-law, Amy & Greg Rich (Flat Rock, IL) and Haley & Eric Honselman (Casey, IL); by his grandchildren, Nathan Rich, Abby Rich, Kelli Honselman, and Clay Honselman; by his siblings, Debbie & Brad Daugherty, David & Ruth Morgan, and Mike Morgan; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Raised in the quaint town of Dundas, IL, Bernie was the epitome of a small-town boy with big dreams. He graduated from East Richland High School, Olney, IL, in the Class of 1967, and carried with him the friendships and values he formed there throughout his life.

Bernie's work ethic was second to none. His career began right after high school, working on a cattle farm where he raised hogs and milked cows. His drive for more responsibility led him to move to Casey, where he managed the well-known Arndt's for 28 years. His dedication to his work continued even after retiring. Not one to let dust settle, he continued to serve his neighbors, this time through public service, working for the City of Casey for 14 years.

His commitment to service didn't stop upon his second retirement, as he became a volunteer for the Casey Thrift Shop, extending his hand to help those in need.

Perhaps one of Bernie's most enduring legacies was his co-founding of the Casey Popcorn Festival. For 33 years, Bernie dedicated every Labor Day weekend to ensuring the festival ran smoothly. His tireless efforts made the festival a beloved tradition in Casey, bringing joy and community spirit to countless residents and visitors alike.

His contributions to the town of Casey were recognized in 2017 when he was named Co-Citizen of the Year. So loved was he in his community that he also had a road in Fairview Park named after him: Bernie Morgan Way. Ever the storyteller, Bernie was a recruiter for the Casey Story Tellers, sharing the town's history and folklore with younger generations.

Bernie's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. A man of many passions, he was a frequent attendee of sprint car races and auctions. His collection of records, NASCAR memorabilia, autographs, and baseball cards was a testament to his love for life and his enthusiasm for the things that brought him joy.

His greatest passion, however, was his grandchildren. A constant presence at their events, his dedication was unwavering. He could be found volunteering his time, keeping scoreboards and stats at baseball or softball games, cheering them on at parades, or supporting them at golf matches. His love for his grandchildren was evident, and he derived genuine joy from their achievements and happiness.

Bernie Morgan was a selfless individual, always putting the needs of others before his own. His wisdom was sought by many, and his passionate approach to life was contagious, inspiring those around him to live fully and give generously. His passing leaves a void in the community he served so diligently, but his legacy will continue to inspire.

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 - 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 17th, at the Casey First Baptist Church, the home of his church family. A memorial service will immediately follow and be held at 12:00 p.m. at the church with Pastor Jon McDonald and Pastor Tom Marsh officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to "Casey Fairview Park" or the "Casey First Baptist Church", with envelopes available at the church.
