Donald Scherer - Class Of 1923

Donald Scherer, 72, 312 S. Washington St., Olney, died this morning, May 24, 1977.  Services at the Zirkle Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Roethemeyer will officiate. Burial in Haven Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Scherer was born Oct. 22, 1904 in Richland County, to Robert and Clara Burgener Scherer. He was married to Lucille Leamon, who died in Feb. 1929, and on March 2, 1932, he married Elsie Berry, who survives.

He was a postal employee for 36 years, retiring in 1967 as superintendent of mail, in Olney. he was a member of the National Association of Retired Postal Employees, the Elk's Lodge, and the First United Church of Christ.

Surviving are his wife; sons, James R. of Decatur and Donald W. of Flora; daughters, Mrs. Albert (Rosemary) Higgins of Olney, Mrs. H. P. (Patricia) Van Cleve of Winston Salem, N. C., and Mrs. Lyle (Shirley Ann) Holt of Newton; a brother, John J. Scherer of Effingham; sisters, Mrs. Jamie (Bernadine) Johnson of rural Olney, and Mrs. Everett (Agnes) Schmoker of Olney; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
