MAQUON - Martha B. Murray Shafer, 99, of 204 N. Main St. died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg.

Born June 5, 1905, in Olney to George B. and Gennie Cosad Murray, she married Walter L. "Pat" Shafer on Sept. 24, 1928, in Salem. He died Dec. 9, 1981.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Moyer; one brother; and one sister.

Surviving are three grandchildren, Michael (and Virginia) Moyer of Stunsin, Calif., Martha (and Ty) Gaither of Springfield, Mo., and Christopher (and Susan) Moyer of Champaign; and two great-grandchildren.

She attended Oxford College for Women in Oxford, Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and then Olney Business College in Olney. She was a member of the Psi Psi Psi Sorority. She taught school for a short period of time. She was a past matron of the former Maquon Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Maquon Library Board. She attended Maquon United Methodist Church in Maquon.

Cremation has been accorded.  Inurnment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.
