Opie Greathouse - Class Of 1920

Opie P. Greathouse, 67, a native of this county, and a resident of Springfield for many years, died February 7, 1970 at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

A graduate of the Olney high school in 1920, Greathouse was sportswriter for the Olney Daily Mail while attending high school and also participated in athletics. He is remembered by many of the older residents.

Prior to his retirement, he had been president and general manager of the St. Nicholas Hotel in Springfield.

Funeral rites were held at Springfield on February 10.

Mr. Greathouse was a member of the Springfield and American Hotel Associations and past president of the Illinois Hotel Association. He served terms on the board of directors of the American Hotel Association.

He came to Springfield in 1951, after being manager of the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, and in 1953 with his associates purchased the land and building of the 200 room  St. Nicholas for $700,000.

The deceased was a member  of the Illinoi Country Club, Springfield Chapter No. 1 of the Masonic organization, Elwood Commandry No. 6, Springfield Consistory, Ansar Shrine and Court No. 20 of the Royal Order of Jesters.  He retired in 1967.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; and one brother, Brady Greathouse of Hillsboro.
