Two Olney Men Die In Crash

Clay City, Ill – Nov. 7 – Two young men were killed early Sunday morning when their car struck the abutment of a bridge on Route 45, near Louisville. Noise of the collision awakened persons living near the bridge and they summoned assistance after giving first aid to the victims. It was necessary to call a wrecker hoist to lift the car from the bodies of one of the men.

Killed were James Jenner, 20 son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Jenner and Alvin Slater, 21 son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Slater, both of Olney.

Jenner was killed instantly and Slater died on the way to the Flora Hospital, E.O. Clodfelter, 22 son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Clodfelter was in critical condition in the Flora Hospital with a fractured skull.

The accident is believed to have occurred when the driver of the car fell asleep while driving. The three youths were returning from a dance in Effingham.

Alvin Slater, 21, son of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Slater, who lived on South Mill street was instantly killed, and was accompanied by James Jenner who also was killed.

Alvin had been employed at the Indian Refinery in Lawrenceville since his graduation from the Olney High School Class of 1929.

Funeral services held in the Evangelical Church with burial in Maple Dale Cemetery.
