Frank Newton - Class Of 1926

Frank Newton

Frank William Newton, age 45, City Clerk of Olney for the past three years, passed away Wednesday morning March 12, 1952 at the Olney Sanitarium.

Mr. Newton, one of Olney's most popular young men, had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at his home on North Boone Street, Sunday evening and had been rushed to the Sanitarium where he failed to rally.  He had not complained of feeling ill and had pursued his usual activities over the week end, the attack coming very suddenly in his home.

Born in Olney, Mr. Newton attended Olney schools and graduated from the Olney Township High School, and then Millikin University. He returned to his home town as a school teacher and athletic instructor in the high school being both a football and basketball coach.

Mr. Newton was coach here for 13 years, producing some fine athletic teams and contributing greatly to developing into manhood many fine young men and women attending school under him. In 1942, he took one of the three Olney teams to reach the state tournament finals to Champaign and won a number of conference championships.

After leaving the school system, Mr. Newton was engaged in the sale of real estate until he was appointed City Clerk when the present Commission took office in 1949. With former Finance Commissioner,  W.W. Tennyson, he set up the finest set of books Olney has ever had and became a highly efficient and valued public servant.

Mr. Newton was a member of Olney Lodge 140 A.F. & A.M. and Olney Lodge 926 B.P.O.E.

He is survived by his wife, Edith; two sons, Timothy age 16 and Mike age 11; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred F. Newton and one brother, Fred Newton, Jr. all of Olney.
