Olney Boy, 17, Suspected Suicide

A 17-year-old Olney boy died Saturday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Greg Rice, a senior at East Richland High School was found dead in his bedroom at the family’s home at about 1:50 a.m. Saturday, said Richland County Coroner, Randy L. Kistler.

“We are treating it as a probable suicide”, Kistler said. A 16-guage shotgun was found in the room, he said.

Kistler has ordered an autopsy, including toxicological tests and an inquest will be conducted; he said.

Greg Rice, 17, of Olney, Illinois, senior at East Richland High School, died Saturday Dec. 28, 1991.  Services at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home, Olney with cremation following services.

Survivors include his parents, Thomas and Eleanor Kaye Taylor Rice, Olney; brothers, Tommy and Ronnie Rice, both of St. Louis, Mo.; Bruce Daniel, Olney; Michael Scott Daniel, Chicago; Karl Daniel, New York, N.Y. sisters, Anita Jones, Edwardsville; Kerri Giesler, Shumway; Ilene Shire Federal Way, Wash.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burton Taylor, Clay City.
