Gilbert Miller - Class Of 1945

Gilbert Miller

Gilbert "Gib" Miller, 88, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016.   A memorial service will be officiated at Caruth Village Funeral Home, 4623 North Highway 7, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.

Gilbert was born December 13, 1927, in Olney, the son of Willis Dale and Helen Regina (Weber) Miller. He married Elaine Joyce, who preceded him in death. He later married Marilea Moore, who survives.

Gib led a full and productive life with a focus on family and service to others. Gib came from a large family in Southern Illinois and was always ready to regale listeners with tales of some long-ago relative. He was devoted to his family and was a strong role model.

He joined the Army in 1945 and spent time in Manila during the end of World War II. He used the GI Bill to attend the University of Illinois, where he ultimately completed his training as a physician.

Gib practiced medicine in Lawrenceville from the late 1950s until he left to join the Air Force as a physician in 1976. Gib practiced at a time when doctors made house calls receiving chickens and eggs in exchange. He delivered his four youngest children as well as hundreds of others in Lawrence County.

Gib joined the Air Force in 1976 and eventually progressed to the rank of Colonel. He served at bases in Midland-Odessa, Texas, Chandler, Arizona, and Biloxi, Mississippi. Gib retired from the Air Force in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where he and Elaine became accomplished sailors.

He has always been involved in charitable activities, from building homes for Habitat for Humanity, to more recently working with the Hot Springs Village Lions Club and a group producing Braille bibles.  Gib enjoyed sailing, playing golf, playing the saxophone, and socializing with friends in the Village and throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Marilea Miller, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; sons, Jeff (Ginger) Miller, of Elgin, Nathan (Kelly) Miller, of Austin, Texas, Brian Miller, of Plano, Texas, Dale (Sally) Miller, of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Chris (Lani) Miller, of Austin, Texas; daughter, Janice (Russell) Miller Smith, of Mesa, Arizona; stepdaughters, Vickie (Bruce) Hartman, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, and Patti (Jochen) Arnold, of Michigan; brother, Jim Miller, of Olney; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 55 years, Elaine Joyce; brother, Willis Dale Miller Jr.; and sister, Helen (Taddy) Swinson.
