William M. Propes

William Murray Propes, age 44, the Chief Radio Operator of the Olney Police Department, passed away very suddenly early Sunday morning, August 30, 1964 at the Richland Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past few days.

“Bill” as he was popularly known, was born June 15, 1920 in Sumner, Illinois the son of William B. and Lucille (Travis) Propes. His parents are deceased.

He had been an employee of the Olney Police Department for the past 17 years and was generally considered one of the most able and efficient Police Radio Operators in this section of the country.

He was a combat veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action against the enemy on February 10, 1944. He served as a member of the 183rd Field Artillery of the United States Army.

He was a member of the Olney Elks Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

Bill was also an enthusiast of horse racing and at one time owned several well-known horses.

He was married to Dollie Kinman on February 21, 1947. She survives him. Also surviving are two sons, Danny and Don Edward Propes, both living at home, Jack Propes of Olney, his brother and Mrs. Norma Bockhus of Oney is his sister.

Bill is also survived by two uncles and an aunt, Ed Propes and Murray Travis of Sumner and Mrs. Lizzie Jones of East St. Louis.

Funeral services will be held in the Memorial Chapel of the Summers-Rainey Funeral Home with the Reverend R.E. Dowden officiating. Interment with full Military Honors rendered by the Olney Veteran Organizations will be in Haven Hill Cemetery.
