James F. Cummins III

James F. Cummins III, M.D., age 80, died Wednesday September 27, 2000 at Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Massachusetts.  Funeral services in St. Mary's Church in Wrentham, Mass. with burial in Wrentham Center Cemetery in Wrentham.

Dr. Cummins was born on April 30, 1920, in Olney the son of James and Maria (Brinker) Cummins. He married Mildred Lemira Shattuck on August 22, 1946. She preceded him in death on August 21, 1999.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1942 and Master of Science degree in 1946 from University of Illinois, received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army as 2nd Lieutenant from June 1942 to August 1945 stationed at Fort Sill, Okla.; and Camp Adair in Corvalis, Ore. In 1957 he moved his growing family to Wrentham, Mass. where he established his practice in Internal Medicine, and served the community as a respected physician and advisor for over 30 years.

In the course of his medical career, Dr. Cummins was Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He served as Medical Director of Kelly School of Social Work at Brandeis University and Chief of Medicine of Jewish Memorial Hospital in Boston. He was honored by Brigham and Women's Hospital in Brookline, Mass. for 25 years of service.

Dr. Cummins is survived by five sons, James Cummins of  Pine City, N.Y., David Cummins of Lyons, Colo., Paul Cummins of Hartselle, Ala., Mark Cummins of Mechanicsville, Va. and Stephen Cummins of Wrentham, Mass.; two daughters, Judith Wechsler of St. Albans, Vt. and  Maureen Cummins of Brewster, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Anderson of Belvidere; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and four brothers, Joseph, Frank, George and Patrick.
