Clyde Harland Mullinax

Kankakee Liquor Store Clerk Slain

Kankakee, Ill – A semi-retired liquor store clerk was killed in his shop when a gunman wordlessly pumped five shots into his chest and abdomen, police said.

Shortly after Clyde Mullinax, 66, was gunned down in his tavern-liquor store late Friday, August 24, 1985, police arrested a patron and former mental patient, said Assistant Police Chief, John Gerard. The suspect was tackled by a bartender and two patrons as he walked out of Park N Shop Liquor, moments after the shooting, he said.

First Deputy Chief Robert Pepin said Sunday he expected charges to be filed today against the man, who was being held in the Kankakee City jail.

Clyde Harl Mullinax was born February 21, 1919 in Parkersburg, Illinois, a son of Rollie E. and Cecile N. (Harris) Mullinax. He married Roberta M. Wright February 21, 1983 in Clark, Nevada and she survives.

Clyde was a U. S. Army veteran.

He is also survived by a brother, Jack R. Mullinax and preceded in death by his parents, Rollie and Cecile Mullinax.
