Barney Voigt

Lou Bernard “Barney” Voigt, 37, of Bethesda, Maryland, a landscape architect, died Wednesday, March 4, 1953 in Suburban Hospital.

He was born June 18, 1915, in Olney, Illinois, the son of Oscar Barney and Lou C. (Hitch) Voigt of 218 E. Elm St., Olney, Illinois. A native of Olney, Illinois, Mr. Voigt was graduated from the University of Illinois and received a Master’s degree in landscape architecture from Harvard.

He helped plan the landscaping at the Oak Ridge (Tennessee) atomic energy plant in 1943. The next year he came to Washington as a designer for the Office of Strategic Services, later working in similar capacities for the State and Interior Departments. In 1950, Mr. Voigt opened his own office.

He was a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

He is survived by his widow, Margaret and a son, Henry of the home address; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.B. Voigt, Olney and two sisters, Mrs. William Turley, Washington, Ill and Mrs. Milford Benham now living in Germany.

Services held in Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home, Bethesda. Interment private. Burial in Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney.
