Dorothy Chaplin (Cammon) - Class Of 1934

Dorothy Chaplin Cammon Class of 1934Dorothy Evelyn Cammon died peacefully on February 28, 2016, at the age of 101 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born on January 11, 1915, to Perry Samuel Chaplin and Verna Victoria (Nettleton) Chaplin near Sumner, Illinois.

A 1934 graduate of Olney Township High School in Olney, Illinois she worked at Tresslar’s Five & Dime Store and Bower’s Drug Store in Olney, IL. After many years in Olney, she and her family relocated to Carlsbad, NM, followed by Pueblo, Colorado; Arvada, CO; and Palm Desert, California.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, active in the Methodist Women’s Group, a Red Cross volunteer and the Ladies Quilting Group, making quilts for Richland Memorial Hospital. Hobbies included sewing, decorating, travel, sightseeing, her flower gardens, drinking strong black coffee and following politics - both locally and nationally.

Dorothy married Loren W. Cammon (Educator and School Administrator) on July 4, 1938 and was the loving mother and parent of five children: Loren C. “Cam”; Suzan “Suzi” of Lawrence, Kansas; Terry and wife Cathy of Arvada, CO; Sally Jo and husband Steve Glover of Albuquerque, NM; James “Jim” and wife Emily of Gallup, NM; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a cousin, Otis Chaplin and nephews Thomas Sterchi of Prairie Village, KS, Ronald Sterchi of Columbia, Missouri and niece Jackie Sterchi Dority of Eagle, CO.

Preceding her in death were both parents, husband Loren W. who died on March 2, 1999, her son, Cam on January 26, 1980 and her only sibling, Gladys Marie Chaplin Sterchi on January 2, 2013.
