Herma Belle Jenner (Dycus)

Herma Bell (Jenner) Dycus, 104, of Olney, died on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney.

Herma was born to Herman Jenner and Nellie (English) Jenner on April 26, 1918 in Olney, Illinois. She married Ray Dycus on September 26, 1945 in Battle Creek, Michigan, and he preceded her in death on June 13, 2006.

She was the oldest of three daughters. Herma was a very hard-working young woman working for “Tubbie Gassmann” at the ice cream shop and Thoedore Zwermann at his two movie theatres. Also, she worked at the Revenue Accounting Office, and when being employed fulltime she went right down to Eagleson’s and bought a car. Just before her marriage, she worked for “Tubbie” again at the Olney Water Plant. She had a long-distance romance with Ray Dycus, and after WWII they were finally married in Battle Creek, Michigan on September 26, 1945. They moved back to Olney to be near her father.

She and Ray owned and operated Dycus Marathon Service with Herma doing the book work. After they retired, she took a job as a Deputy Olney Township Tax Assessor and retired from there after 20 years. She served as an election judge in Olney for 40 years.

Herma was a lifelong member of Elm St. Christian Church until her later years, when she attended Calvary Baptist Church with her daughter.

Herma was an avid bridge player and enjoyed annual vacations with her sisters. While living at Brookstone, she met an old friend, Max Hocking, and enjoyed his company until his death in 2018.

She is survived by her daughters, Jane (George) Fritschle of Olney and Nancy (Robert) Bowles of Roswell, Mew Mexico; one sister, Helen Mehmert Bauman; Niece, Cecelia of Greenville, Texas; Nephew, Michael Mehmert of Evergreen, Colorado, and one other niece and nephew; 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 2 expected great grandchildren.

Herma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her sister, Ruth Zwermann.

A Graveside Service will be held for Herma at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 1, 2022 at Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney. Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials can be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Olney.

Dick Landenberger (1957)

What a good neighbor Herma was to our family. We lived across the alley and benefited from all the enjoyable things neighbors do.
