Leola Piper (Boyce) - Class Of 1932

Leola Frances Piper Boyce, 87, of Pleasant Hill, passed away March 1, 2001. A memorial service held at Pleasant Hill Community Church.

Mrs. Boyce was born March 14, 1913, in West Liberty, IL, the daughter of Zina M. and Bessie Lewis Piper. She completed her training as a registered nurse in Olney, IL, and performed graduate training in Washington, DC. Her first job was operating room supervisor at Uplands Sanitarium in Pleasant Hill in 1936.

After marrying William Alexander Boyce in 1939, she worked in Wolf County, KY, as a county public health nurse. She and her husband worked together as herdsmen at the University of Tennessee, served as farm manager and director of the Farm and Community Center of Uplands in Pleasant Hill for the American Missionary Board, and were farm managers for private farms in Crossville and Celina, TN. Their last job together, before retiring in 1978 to the Uplands Retirement Community, was livestock specialists for the Tennessee Prison System. Mrs. Boyce was also active in church, Parent Teacher Association and County Homemakers.

Survivors include her sons, Paul A. Boyce of Celina, Robert P. Boyce of Berea, KY, and Stephen L. Boyce of Knoxville, TN; daughter, Elizabeth F. Gann of Bowling Green, KY; sisters, Geraldine Piper of Pleasant Hill and Dorothy Cabeen of Lynchburg, VA; five grandchildren; and two granddaughters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Zina M. and Bessie Lewis Piper; her husband, William Alexander Boyce; and a brother, Harold T. Piper.
