Lowell Noll

Little Hope Seen for Recovery of Drowned Man

Harrison, Idaho – There was little hope Monday that the body of Lowell H. Noll, 52 of Spokane, Washington, would be recovered from Lake Coeur d’Alene where he apparently died Saturday, May 14, 1966, said Kootenai County Sheriff, John Bender.

Noll and a companion, Joseph T. Daniels, 56 also of Spokane, were in a boat heading for Windy Bay when Noll apparently suffered a heart attack, Bender said.

Noll fell to the bottom of the boat, causing it to overturn in the icy 200-feet deep water. Daniels reported the two men held on to boat cushions, but after about 2 ½ hours, Noll lost his grip and sank. Daniels was rescued and taken to Deaconess Hospital at Spokane. He was released from the hospital on Sunday. It was believed Noll drowned when the boat was overturned by the choppy water.

Bender said a search for the body was hampered by the extreme depth and murky color of the water and a fast current. Kootenai County Sheriff said a watch will be kept along the lake shore in search for Noll’s body. Dragging operations conducted all day Sunday were fruitless.

Noll was born March 28, 1913 in Illinois, son of Herman A. and Clara M. Payne Noll. He was a World War II U. S. Army Air Corps veteran.

Burial in Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery, Spokane, Wash.
