Two men from Effingham and Olney found dead near St. Louis

PONTOON BEACH - An Effingham man and another from Olney were found dead in a Madison County motel room this week, but authorities said Tuesday they are still unsure how they died.

The bodies of Duane A. Logsdon, 31, of Effingham, and David A. Davis, 30, of Olney, were found at 6:42 a.m. Monday at the Super 8 Motel in Pontoon Beach, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis. Madison County Coroner's Investigator Todd R. Ballard pronounced Logsdon dead at 8:21 a.m. and Davis at 8:22 a.m.

Coroner Steve Nonn said in a news release that autopsies for both men were conducted Monday afternoon with inconclusive results. Nonn said he was waiting for results of toxicology tests before determining a cause of death.

"No overt indication of foul play was present," Nonn said. The coroner's office, Pontoon Beach police and Illinois State Police crime scene services were continuing to investigate.

Ashley Goodlander of Olney, who works with Davis' mother, said the men were in the St. Louis area doing work for ACI Roofing, an Olney-based commercial roofing company.

Deaths of Logsdon, Davis in Madison County Were Drug-Related

The Madison County Coroner's Office has ruled the deaths of an Effingham man and an Olney man were drug-related, but were accidents.

Coroner's Office Chief Investigator Kelly Rogers said the final autopsy report has been received. The report indicates that 31-year-old Duane Logsdon of Effingham's cause of death was probable suffocation due to methamphetamine and heroin intoxication. Rogers said Logsdon's head was turned in a position such that his airway was cut off.

Rogers said the death of 30-year-old David Davis of Olney was caused by heroin intoxication.

Both men were found dead in a motel in Pontoon Beach the morning of August 24.
