Fred Newton - Class Of 1932

Fred Newton Jr., 83 of Olney, died Sunday November 9, 1997 in Mattoon.  Services at First United Methodist Church in Olney with Rev. Bruce Rushing officiating. Burial in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.

Newton was born July 20, 1914 in Olney, the son of Fred and Ina Mae (Petty) Newton Sr. He married Frances Lee Bonham January 23, 1939. She preceded him in death November 10, 1994.

He was a retired executive vice-president and chairman of the Board of First National Bank in Olney and a graduate of Olney High School, Millikin University and attended University of Illinois.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Olney, Olney Masonic Lodge #140 A.F.&A.M., Ainad Temple, Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite of Belleville, 32nd Degree Mason, Center Shrine Club, Olney Eagles and was a past exalted ruler of Olney Elks #926. He served as a police commissioner, mental health board, taught economics at Olney Central College, helped build the Girl Scout House, was instrumental in helping to secure and develop East Fork Lake and was a past member of Richland County Country Club.

He is survived by one son, Bill Newton and his wife, Liz of Mattoon; two daughters, Dannee Newton of Highland and Becky Shockley and her husband, Rick of Mattoon; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother, Frank.
