John Robert Schaeffer, 74, of Modesto, California, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Stanford Medical Center, Palo Alto.

Mr. Schaeffer was a native of Olney, Ill., born December 18, 1929.  He had lived in Modesto since 1992 and previously lived in Sacramento. He was an administrator with the California Department of Education in Sacramento from 1954 to 1991, and also taught at the Durante Elementary School District. He was a member of United Methodist Church. He enjoyed skiing, golfing and travel. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953.

He is survived by his wife, Linda R. Schaeffer of Modesto; children, Susan Merrill of Tacoma, Wash., Karen Somers of San Diego and Robert Schaeffer of Sacramento; stepchildren, Chris White and Kelli Beyer, both of Modesto; brother, Richard Schaeffer of Palmdale; sister, Carolyn Wiche of Minneapolis; and seven grandchildren.
