Otis Hammel (English/Biology 1956 & 1957)

Otis Leonard Hammel, 85, of Bridgeport, Illinois passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Aperion Heath Care of Bridgeport, Illinois.

He was born on January 14, 1930 to Samual A. Hammel and Matilda (Dietrich) Hammel in Ellis Grove, Illinois.  He married his first wife Janice (Bundy) Hammel on November 15,1957 and she preceded him in death on December 14, 1992. He married Betty Jane (Reid) Hammel on May 1, 1999 and she survives.

Otis served his Country in the United States Army. Otis was a very dedicated School Teacher in the Red Hill School District for 32 years from 1960 thru 1992. He also served on the Bridgeport City Council for 10 years.

He was a Mason and belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Carthage, Illinois; He was a member of the Illinois Teachers Association, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, the Elks Lodge of Lawrenceville, and the American Legion.

Otis was a member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church in Chester Illinois.

He is survived by his wife Betty , 2 sisters Maylene Cole of Ohio, Garlene Morrison of Chester, Illinois, 2 brothers Roland Hammel and wife Phylis of Chester, Illinois, Neal Hammel and wife Judy of Chester Illinois, 2 sons David Hammel and wife Jean of Bridgeport, Illinois, Douglas Hammel and wife Jeanette of Brownsburg, Indiana, 2 daughters Denise DesJardin of Newburgh, Indiana , Anglea Gilbert and husband Randy of Chester, Illinois, 2 grandsons Wayne Hammel and wife Amber of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Trey DesJardin of Newburgh, Indiana, 4 granddaughters Audrey McGee and husband Nick of Mt. Carmel, Jordyn Hammel of Marion, Illinois, Madalyn Hammel of Bridgeport, Illinois and Melanie Kirincich and husband James of Washington DC, 3 great-granddaughters Brynlee Hammel, Brookelyn Hammel and Paisley McGee and 1 great-grandson Colton McGee and his mother- in- law Cathlyn Bundy of Bridgeport, Illinois.

Otis was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife Janice.

Otis’s wishes were to be cremated with no services. Inurnment will be in the Bridgeport Township Cemetery at a later date.
