Glen DeMaire

Hero Loses Life In Rescue Effort

Williamsburg, Kansas – Glen Roy DeMaire alerted three people to a fire in a trailer home at Timberlake Ranch, but then time ran out on him. He was trapped inside. “It appears he saved everyone but himself” said Lt. Alan Radcliffe, fire investigator for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

DeMaire, 32, formerly of Quenemo, was found dead on a bathroom floor in the trailer after firefighters extinguished the blaze early Saturday. Preliminary autopsy reports indicate he died of smoke inhalation, Radcliffe said.

He was an employee of Timberlake Ranch, a resort located about 50 miles southwest of Kansas City, Kansas, and had lived in the mobile home about a month. The fire was not related to the Christmas decorations for which the ranch is known and there were no decorations on or in the trailer, Radcliffe said.

DeMaire’s actions saved the lives of three others who were asleep in the trailer, Radcliffe said. The three other people were able to escape the blaze. Firefighters arrived within five minutes of the 5:22 a.m. call and soon had the fire under control. Investigators have not determined why DeMaire was found in the bathroom and why he couldn’t get out.

Radcliffe said preliminary investigation showed the fire may have been caused by an electrical short.
