Gwendolyn McKinley (Waxler)

Gwendolyn McKinley Waxler,  92, died Tuesday, September 22, 2015 in Mason, Michigan.  She was born September 7, 1923 in Olney, Illinois,  the daughter of Cecil Carr and Verna (Landis) McKinley.

She married Glenn Waxler on April 28, 1946. She attended Indiana Business College after high school graduation and worked for five years at the draft board in Olney.

Following their marriage and Glenn's Army service, they moved to Champaign, Illinois where Glenn attended veterinary school and Gwen worked as a typist. Glenn spent four years in private practice in Olney. Gwen assisted him in the clinic and kept the books.

In 1957 they moved to East Lansing, Michigan where Glenn attended graduate school and joined the faculty of MSU. Gwen was a homemaker and raised two daughters. She spent much of her time sewing for her family and assuring that they were provided healthy meals with green vegetables, used proper grammar, wore clean and ironed clothing, and had a loving home. She later worked part time as the secretary at University United Methodist Church and was a Life Member of the Sparrow Hospital Auxiliary, regularly volunteering at the hospital. She and Glenn were charter members of the University United Methodist Church and were actively involved in church activities.

She enjoyed crafts, camping, traveling, and the cottage that she and Glenn built together, Chimney Oaks.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 61 years, Glenn, her sister, Maxine, and three brothers-in-law.

She is survived by daughters, Susan (Ron) Stahl and Karol (Patrick) Mikula; five grandchildren, Erin (David) Boone, Justin (Jessica) Stahl, Andrew, Brendon and Connor Mikula; six great grandchildren, Kolton, Baylee, and Reagan Sloan, Kaeli and Aiden Boone, and Elizabeth Stahl; sisters-in-law Elva Waxler and George Ann Waxler and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Sunday, October 4, at the University United Methodist Church, East Lansing, MI. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing, MI.
