Norman Lamkin

Norman I. Lamkin, 53, of Grove City, Ohio, formerly of Olney, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 13, 1976 in Columbus, Ohio.  Funeral services at Summers Funeral Home with interment in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.

Mr. Lamkin was born August 26, 1922 in Olney, son of Virgil and Agnes Burgener Lamkin. He was united in marriage to Louise Parker.

Surviving are his wife, Louise; his mother Mrs. Agnes Lamkin of Olney; a daughter, Mrs. Deborah Pace of Cisne; two step-daughters, Mrs. Brenda Barnes and Mrs. Lynda Young, both of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.

Mr. Lamkin was a graduate of Olney Township High School and a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Following the war, he returned to Olney and was associated with his father in the Lamkin Motor Sales here for several years.

He became a full-time employee of Olney Radio Station WVLN and was the station's play-by-play sports announcer from the time it went on the air in 1948. He was one of the state's most popular announcers, before leaving the radio business in the early 1960's to go into race track announcing. At the time of his death, he was race track announcer at Pocono Downs Race Track in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and Beulah Park at Grove City, Ohio.

Lamkin was elected to the Olney City Council in 1957 and served a four year term. He was also formerly a member of the Richland County Fair Board and City Park Board. He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association, Olney Elks Lodge #926 BPOElks in Olney and a past exalted ruler and a member of other organizations.

He was preceded in death by his father.
