G. Vern Petty, 87, of Olney died at 12:50 p.m Monday, May 26, 1997 at Burgin Nursing Manor in Olney.  Funeral services at First United Methodist Church in Olney with Rev. Mark Myers officiating. Burial in Sumner City Cemetery.

Petty was born August 5, 1909 in Sumner, the son of Peter Otis and Mary M. (Case) Petty. He married Georgia Lafern Gray July 23, 1933 in Sumner. She preceded him in death Sept. 28, 1994.

He taught grade school and high school for 34 years. He retired in 1975 as the department head of trade and industrial occupation at the East Richland High School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Olney, Masonic Lodge #140 A.F. & A.M., National Education Association and the Illinois Education Association and Richland County Retired Teacher Association.

He is survived by one son, Gerald Lee Petty of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Marilyn Joyce Michels of Olney and Judith Ann Johnson of Littleton, Co.; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother, Virgil O. Petty, and three sisters, Gladys Sharp, Dorothy Garriott and Doris Pohl.
