Arrah Jean Shumaker, 87, of Northbrook and formerly of Olney, died at 12:39 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2011, at Brandel Care Center in Northbrook.  Burial in Oblong Cemtery.

Mrs. Shumaker was born March 22, 1923, in Loami, the daughter of Albert Thurman and Rowena Grace (Neil) Workman.  She married John Claire Shumaker on March 8, 1945. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1994.

Mrs. Shumaker was a history teacher for East Richland School District for more than 40 years.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Olney Bicentennial Committee, DAR, 50-plus-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi, 50-plus-year member VFW Auxiliary, and Toastmasters.

Mrs. Shumaker is survived by a daughter, Margot M. Steinhart and her husband, Frank, of Glenview; a brother, Lavern Workman (Junior) and his wife, Eileen, of Chatham; brother, Gary Workman and his wife, Barbara, of Moorhead, Minn.; grandson, Eric Shumaker; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shumaker, parents, and brothers, Byron, Dean, Dale and Errol Workman.
