Carol A. Fehrenbacher (Fine)

Carol Ann (Fehrenbacher) Fine, 76, passed away July 13, 2023.  She was the wife of Gary Fine. Carol passed away at home after months of caring during her short illness by her loving husband, Gary. She was born in Newton, Illinois, January 27, 1947, daughter of Henry and LaVerne (Ochs) Fehrenbacher, who precede her in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Cathy "Caz" (LD) Culberson and Jennifer (Jim) Wilson, her grandchildren, Emily (Riley) Buchanan and Brian (Kate Lane) Culberson as well as her brothers Randy (Phyllis) Fehrenbacher and Bob (Vicki) Fehrenbacher.

Carol grew up in Olney, Illinois, where she graduated high school and attended Olney Community College. Before her daughters were born, she taught second grade at St. Mary's in Mattoon, Illinois. When her children were young, she was a religious teacher as well as a girl-scout leader.

She returned to school at the University of Michigan in her early thirties. After completing her Bachelors of Science in Nursing, she worked for St. Vincent Hospital and Ascension Health in Indianapolis.

She was a 25 years member of the Indianapolis Hiking Club and belonged to Indy Dancers Club. She was very active and could be seen walking the neighborhood or biking at Eagle Creek Park. One of her favorite things was to see the sunset over Eagle Creek Reservoir. She and Gary went to many local hiking events as well as hikes in Gatlinburg and the State parks in Indiana.

Before Covid isolation, she regularly attended the Garden, an extended community of the Indianapolis United Methodist Church.

There will be a memorial gathering and celebration of life on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park North Indianapolis.

Oh, this is such heartbreaking news.  Carol and I have been friends since first grade at St. Joe's, seventy years ago.  She was smart and fun, beautiful and caring, the best kind of friend.   After a few years in Ruma, she came back to ERHS.  We reconnected as lab partners in Mr. DeBarr's class.  She was the steady hand in all those experiments.  After going our separate ways in college and life, our fathers reconnected us once again.  They discovered we were living only a few miles away from each other in Michigan.  It was a wonderful reunion and we never lost track of each other again.  In later years, after she moved to Indiana, we stayed in touch with letters, cards and occasional visits to Olney.  Carol made it all special.

Thank you, Marcella, for sharing your fond memories of Carol. How very sad to read of Carol’s passing. She was a classmate with whom it was always a pleasure to catch up with at our class reunions and to hear of her satisfaction of becoming a nurse. Her obituary conveys the image of a life well lived, even if too short.

Caro and I went through St, Joe for 8 years together and I must say we were a closely knitted class. It was always good to see her at our class reunions later in life and catch up on what each other was doing. This was a complete shock. My prayers go out to her family and friends.

Just getting home from a heart warming highschool class reunion, and finding Carol in the obits was like a punch in the gut. Carol and I grew up in the same neighborhood. Playing all the kid games, hide and go seek, mother may I, red light green light, kick the can. We rode the same taxi cab to kindergarten pm, at Silver. Then 8 years of St. Joe grade school. And walking home from grade school most days as a neighborhood group. May she rest, now, in the loving arms of Jesus.
