Nellie Lou Peters, 84, of Champaign, Illinois died Sunday Feb. 3, 2013 in Mahomet. A strong woman and double cancer survivor, she was just not able to survive this lung cancer.  Services at Blair-Owens Funeral Home, Mahomet, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating.  Burial in Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights.

Nellie Lou was born in Poseyville, Ind., on March 17, 1928, to Dorcas Lee and James Myron Elliott. She married John Peters on Nov. 20, 1960. He preceded her in death in 1999. She is survived by many family members, nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Olney High School in 1946; was co-editor of the yearbook, cheerleader and voted most popular. In junior high school, at 5'2" she was the center on the basketball team. She also attended the University of Illinois.

Nellie Lou worked for Caseyville Township and Clifford Jacobs in Champaign. She was a supporter of Habitat for Humanity, the Special Olympics and she, along with her husband, would volunteer at the Fairview Heights Food Pantry.
