Carol was my best friend during high school despite our rivalry for first chair clarinet!  I was in her wedding.  She died in September of 2001 after years of struggling with schizophrenia.  One of her dear friends in Anna gave a beautiful talk at the funeral about how we understand and sympathize with illnesses of the body, but we don't understand, and often don't sympathize with, illnesses of the mind.  A lesson I hope I never forget.
