Doris June (Stout) Hargis, 90, of Willow Hill, IL passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on July 31, 2023, at StoneBridge Memory Care in Olney, IL.  She was born in Richland County on June 22, 1933, to Sherman and Pansy (Albert) Stout. On June 21, 1952, in Lawrence County, IL she married the love of her life, Eugene “Gene” Hargis, who survives.

Doris performed secretarial work for Judge Carey Winters while in high school and then for Rich Law Insurance and City Service Oil Company in Olney, IL. She then went to work for the State of Illinois as a supervisor at the Department of Unemployment, Division Claims Department. After 34 years of service, she retired on June 24, 2012.

She was a member of the Chauncey Church of God and the Richland County High School Class of 1951. As an avid vegetable and flower gardener, Doris would check her gardens every morning before going to work. She also loved horses, horse racing, antiquing, and collecting antique tractors. She enjoyed treating her family to big dinners, celebrating her and Gene’s birthdays and anniversaries. Most of all she loved God and her church. Doris will be truly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Eugene “Gene” Hargis, Willow Hill, IL.; a sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and Donald Polk, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Ivan, Melvin, George, Wilber, and Dean; sisters Opal Kirkland, Vera Stout and 2 infant sisters.

Celebration of Doris’s Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday August 4, 2023, at Pulliam Funeral Home in Oblong, IL. Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday August 3, 2023, at Pulliam Funeral Home in Oblong, IL.
