Richard W. Crites

Richard CritesRichard W. Crites, 70, of Roanoke, Virginia died peacefully at home with family by his side, on Friday September 4, 2015.

Rich was born on December 7, 1944 in Olney, Illinois, son of the late Charlie and Marie Crites.

He is survived by his wife, Connie, two daughters, Kirsten Pierce (Phillip) and Kelly Maurer (Geoff) and his grandsons Michael and Nathan Pierce, and Will and Daniel Maurer, and soon to be born granddaughter Maya Maurer.  He is also survived by his sister Norma Jean Umfleet, sister-in-law Jan Crites and a host of extended family.

Rich began his teaching career at Virginia Western Community College in the fall of 1968 after completing his Bachelor of Science (Education) and Master of Science (Biology) from Eastern Illinois University. He taught numerous classes in biology and botany until his retirement in 2001. In May 2012 he was named Professor Emeritus. He also taught for 15 years in the Adult Degree Program for Mary Baldwin College in Roanoke . Rich was considered a dedicated teacher by both colleagues and students. He is perhaps best known for the courses and many field trips involving wildflowers and was often referred to as “Mr. Wildflower.” One of his college professors suggested that he open doors and make opportunities for his students. In so doing, his legacy is that he made a difference in the lives of his students through his kind, gentle and thoughtful ways.

He was active in many local, state, and national professional organizations. He was instrumental in the creation and development of the Community Arboretum and the formation of the Blue Ridge Wildflower Society. He loved his church family and cherished his personal relationship with God. He was a long time member of the Roanoke Church of Christ and his servant life was evident to all those with whom he came in contact.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Roanoke Church of Christ with Mr. Keith Wagner officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Oakey’s South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Arboretum at 3098 Colonial Avenue, Roanoke, Virginia 24015 or the Rescue Mission at P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, Virginia 24022.

What a great loss! One of many outstanding graduates of Claremont grade school and one of my mother's favorite students.  She would have been so proud of his accomplishments.  I especially admire his courage in attending our class reunion while battling his difficult health conditions.  We'll miss you.

Want to school with Richard from 1st grade through High School.  We got into Poison Ivy fight while working on the township roads cutting brush.  Richard had a rash that caused him to miss work for several days. Last time we did that.

Richard will be missed by all that knew him

I lived app a mile north of Richard and we rode the same school bus all through grade and high school ---thus leaving me with good memories of fun times.  He was a really nice guy then and went on to be another excellent representative of ERHS and Claremont grade school.   His lifetime accompllishments are outstanding.

I'm sure that Richard will sadly missed by all. He was always a soft spoken person. I remember him in many classes and playing baseball in Babe Ruth.
