Archibald Spelman - Class Of 1919

Dr. Arch E. Spelman, M.D., 66, former Olney resident and a surgeon and general practitioner at Smithville, Mo., died Monday, October 9, 1967 in Smithville Community Hospital which he founded in 1938.

Dr. Spelman was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Spelman and spent his earlier years in Olney.  He graduated from the Olney Township High School in 1919 and learned the printers trade at the Daily Mail and also worked for A.E. Schultz when the Schultz Seed Co. had it's own printing plant.  Later he worked on the Daily Illini at Champaign and was a linotype operator.  He graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago in 1928.  He had practiced medicine in Missouri since completing his internship and residency in surgery at Halstead, Kan.  Instead of practicing in the large city, he preferred rural practice.

In addition to his medical and surgical practice, he also was a writer in the medical field and was on the academic staff of the University of Missouri Medical School.

His survivors include the following; his wife, Mrs. Esther Spelman; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Shockey of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a son, James who is a lawyer at Boulder, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Williams of Springfield and Miss Helen Spelman of Olney and four brothers, Everett of Denver, Colo., Howard of Indianapolis, Ind., Charles of Albuquerque, N.M. and Lewis of Terre Haute, Ind.
