David Sanders (Biology 1952--1953)

David Sanders, 91, of Quincy, Illinois died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at the Illinois Veterans Home.

David was born March 8, 1926, in Makanda, a son of David Riley and Kate (Day) Sanders Sr. He married Doris E. Bissey on March 6, 1953, in Lawrenceville, Illinois and she survives.  

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946 and was on board the USS Missouri at the signing of the peace treaty with Japan.

He received his bachelor of science degree in botany from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and his master in science degree from Ohio State University. Mr. Sanders taught biology, microbiology and zoology at Quincy Senior High School for 33 years. He retired in 1985. Prior to his move to Quincy, IL, David taught Biology at East Richland High School from 1952-1953.

Mr. Sanders was beloved by his students, and he loved teaching the sciences. He had been a Boy Scout leader and youth baseball coach. His hobbies included being an avid golfer and master gardener.

In addition to his wife, Doris, survivors include his children, Kent (Cindy) Sanders of Cincinnati, Brian Sanders of Hilliard, Ohio, and Bill (Susan) Sanders of Quincy; grandchildren, Cristina Sanders, David (Maribel) Sanders, Hannah and Danielle Sanders; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Waller of Baton Rouge, La.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his eight brothers and sisters.

Graveside service at Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veterans Home. Military honors conducted graveside.
