Paul A. C. Maas

Paul AC Maas, 84 a retired educator in Granite City, died of natural causes Sunday Oct. 26, 2003 at his home in Granite City, Illinois.

Mr. Maas was born to Theodore and Bertha Maas on a farm near Olney, where he received his high school education. Mr. Maas received a bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill., and a master's from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

While attending a church function, Mr. Maas met Maxine Smith. They married in 1942. A year later, Mr. Maas enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II. He attained the rank of first lieutenant, and he was honorably discharged in 1946. In the early 1950s, Mr. Maas started teaching shop and drivers education at Granite City High School. He taught at the high school for 25 years, retiring in 1978. During the summers, while teaching, Mr. Maas worked for the National Park Service in Montana, where he had a summer home.

Among survivors are his wife, Maxine Smith Maas; two daughters, Beverly Barr of Maryville and Karen McDonough of Bethalto; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Wednesday at Thomas Saksa Funeral Home in Granite City. Burial was at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Glen Carbon.
