
Miss Mary Powell, 79, of 1109 N. Fair St., Olney, died Friday morning May 5, 1978 at her home. Funeral services at the Immanuel United Methodist Church, with Pastor Elmer Fenton officiating. Burial in Crest Haven Memorial Park.
She was born in German Township July 2, 1898, daughter of Charles J. Powell and Mattie Nicholson. Miss Powell was a registered nurse, and was school nurse in the Olney school system for many years.
Surviving are a brother, Eugene Powell of Oak Park, and three nieces who were raised in her home; Alice Brinker of Anchorage, Alaska, Bernice Adams and Leora Prince, both of El Paso, Tex.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Miss Powell was also a wonderful mentor to many young woman who followed her into the nursing profession—at a time lacking in encouragement for girls seeking advanced education.

Mary Powell was an excellent health provider to students, and an inspiration for those who entered the nursing field. She took the Future Nurses Club on many field trips to explore nursing programs, one of which I entered. In addition to hospital and public health, I was a school nurse for over 20 years.
