Clyde Edward Long

CLYDE LONG JR., DIES OF VIETNAM WAR INJURIES  - The war in Vietnam has claimed the life of another Richland County youth.

Clyde E. Long Jr., age 21, a former resident of Olney Rt. 4, passed away at a hospital in Japan at 1:20 this morning, June 27, 1967, from severe burns received in a combat operation in Vietnam, when the military vehicle in which he was riding hit a hostile mine which exploded.

He was treated and evacuated to a hospital in Japan with third degree burns over 75 percent of his body.

His father, Clyde E. Long, Sr., formerly of Olney and now living in Bridgeport, received a telegram telling of the combat injury. The telegram stated that there was cause for concern over the soldier's condition at that time.

Pfc. Long was a 1963 ERHS graduate and attended Olney Community College before entering military service in March of 1966. He arrived in Vietnam on May 6 of this year. He was employed at Prairie Farms Dairy while living in Olney.

In addition to his father, he is also survived by two sisters, Veta Ann Long, who is an employee of General Telephone Co. in Bloomington and Nancy Jo, at home.

As we were often seated in alphabetical order in highschool, Clyde was occasionally the kid next to me in classes("K-L"). Without saying much, he made a lasting impression as a really nice person. Clyde's smile said more than words. I recently traced his name on the Vietnam Veterans' Wall in Washington DC and considered how much he'd missed in his short life and how much some of us missed by not knowing him better.
