George Lowry

George Lowry, 73, of Springfield IL died January 1, 2016 following a long illness.  Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.

The son of John and Dorotha (Hogge) Lowry, George was born in Joliet IL. He spent his early years in Beecher City, IL with his mother, aunts, and grandparents while his father served in the Pacific during WWII. After the war his family moved to Olney, IL and welcomed his sister Ann (Lowry) Miller. Following graduation from East Richland High School in Olney, George enrolled at his mother's alma mater Eastern Illinois University and earned a Master of Art Education degree. He briefly taught in the Chicago area before accepting a position at the newly formed Lincoln Land Community College in the early 1970s and taught there until his retirement in 2003.

George was involved in many activities throughout his life from martial arts to studying and growing Bonsai trees and learning the Japanese tea ceremony to cowboy shooting and competition skeet shooting to ballroom dancing. He enjoyed his many friends and dearly loved all of his family. He enjoyed teaching and meeting students years later in all walks of life.

George is survived by his siblings, Ann (Max) Miller of Olney, IL, Gene Lowry of Roseburg, OR, Ada (David) Liskey of Roseburg, OR, and Ramona Neuman of Lenexa, KS; along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Also surviving are former spouses Jean (Rezabeck) Schram of Troy, IL, Deborah (Timms) Lowry of Dagsborro, DE and Pamela (Compton) Lowry of Springfield, IL. He is also survived by his friend of more than forty years, who he loved like a brother, Paul Dorkins of Springfield, IL.

In addition, George is survived by his children and grandchildren. Whether these children were born to him or born in his heart; they are his pride and joy, and his legacy. They are James (Mia Wallace) Schram and grandchildren Hayden, Gabbie, and Brody of O'Fallon, IL; Peter (Traci Sams) Schram and grandchildren Gracie and Madison of San Clemente, CA; Morgan (Andria Friederich) Schram and grandchildren Merek and Michael of Troy, IL; Clayton Lowry of Springfield, IL; and Jonathon (Michele Koester) Lowry and grandchildren Brandt and Payton of Springfield, IL; Jason (Angela Gray) Albers and grandchildren Abigail, Gabrielle, and Madeline of Springfield, IL; and Jessica (Ben) McCormick and grandchild Asher of Chatham, IL.

Open House: The family will host an open house to celebrate his life and works on Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at his home.

Kathryn Haenggi (Robinett) (1961)

We rode the same school bus and played our clarinets together in band during our high school years.  George was always pleasant and kind .  My deepest sympathy to his family for their loss.                                         Classmate, Kathryn Haenggi Robinett

Karen Jill Helm (Petrini) (1963)

I was in French class with George.  He was fun and funny. I know many will miss him.  My condolences to his family.
