Hugh N. Winans - Class Of 1911

Prominent Canton Man Dies in Coast Hospital

Hugh Neal Winans, age 51, well known Madison County Mississippi citizen and a WW I US Army veteran, died in the Veteran’s Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi, Thursday afternoon, March 22, 1945. Mr. Winans was born January 6, 1894 in Olney, Illinois son of Joseph M. and Lottie M. (Baughman) Winans.

Mr. Winans served in France 19 months during WW I. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Barfield Pease Post of the American Legion. He had, until his health prevented, taken an active part in Legion activities.

He helped organize the Madison County Co-ops and Madison County Farm Bureau and was vice-president of the State Farm Bureau 1924-1940. Mr. Winans was also active in Boy Scout work.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dora Winans; four sons, Lieut. Neal Winans with Patton’s Army in Germany, Sgt. Bill Winans with the 9th Army in Germany, Joe and Rufus Winans of Canton. Also surviving are three sisters, Miss Lula Winans, Youngstown, OH, Mrs. W.B. Bunn, Pittsfield, IL, Mrs. J.C. Leaton, Wilmette, IL and one brother, Mr. Ed Winans, Springfield, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Winans.

Funeral rites conducted in Canton by the American Legion.
