Clarence A. Harmon - Class Of 1911

Man’s Body Is Found In His Car

A 64-year-old Valparaiso, Indiana man apparently took his own life Monday night, December 31, 1957 with carbon monoxide, Deputy Coroner, Leonard Wetmore reported today.

The body of Clarence Alvin Harmon, of 704 Erie, was found in his car by a neighbor, Jess D. Claudon. The car was parked in a driveway leading into the Harmon garage.

Making the investigation besides Wetmore were Sgts. John Kane and Randall Mann. Police said that they were advised by Claudon that when he went to his own car early this morning he found a note apparently signed by Harmon, which asked Claudon to look in his (Harmon’s) automobile.

Officials said that they found two vacuum sweeper hoses which had been attached together. One end was over the exhaust and the other was placed in the front window. The motor of the car was still running, police said.

Harmon was well-known in Valparaiso as a vacuum cleaner salesman.

He is survived by three sons, Charles of Valparaiso, Harold of Hartford City, Conn. and Donald of Cincinnati; and eight grandchildren.

His wife, Norah M. (Tudor) Harmon preceded him in death as well as his parents, Alvin J. and Sarah E. (Walker) Harmon.

Clarence A. Harmon was born December 15, 1893 in Olney, Illinois.
