Frank S. Shy, 88, dies; CPA, former auto dealer, sportsman

Frank Spain Shy, 88, of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, one-time president of Associated Industries of Rhode Island, a certified public accountant, and former auto dealer, died Sunday, October 14, 1984 at Kent County Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Marjorie (Robert) Shy.

Born October 22, 1896 in Olney, Ill., he was a son of the late Walter C. and Minerva (Spain) Shy.

Mr. Shy joined Haskins & Sells in 1923 as a CPA, and a year later became associated with W.P. Hamblin Inc., the former Providence Dodge-Plymouth distributor. He bought the dealership in 1928 and owned it until retiring in 1954. He was a past director and president of the Rhode Island Automobile Dealers Association.

During World War II, he headed the scrap metal drive for the state, served on the War Finance Committee, and also as director of the security fund division for the Second War Loan Campaign.

A bridge player known for his dedication and skill, he was president for six terms of the Bridge Club of Rhode Island. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a sports enthusiast until his death.

Mr. Shy formerly was a member of the Turks Head Club, Providence, and the Dunes Club, Narragansett. He was a 1918 graduate of the University of Illinois, and a Navy ensign in World War I.

He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Fred I. Brown Jr. of Cincinnati, Mrs. H. Frank Freeman of New York and Mrs. Robert A. Creed of Warwick; a sister, Virginia Funk of Hemet, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

A memorial service held at Swan Point Cemetery Chapel, Blackstone Boulevard, Providence. Burial was private.
