Bessie Markman - Class Of 1904

Miss Bessie Markman, age 31, died of pneumonia Wednesday night, January 29, 1919, at the home of her mother, Mrs. Mary Markman on East Chestnut Street. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon.

She was born August 8, 1887 daughter of William and Mary J. (Brian) Markman.

Miss Markman was stricken with influenza two weeks ago which almost immediately developed into pneumonia.

Miss Markman was a graduate of McKendree College and taught two years in the Salem high school. Following her work there she came to Olney and for the past three years has been teacher of German and English in the Olney Township High School.

She was one of the foremost teachers in Southern Illinois, her best endeavors ever being for the benefit of her pupils, all of whom held her in the highest esteem.
Miss Markman was an earnest and untiring worker in the M. E. church, being especially active in the Sunday school and Epworth League.

She is survived by her mother; one sister, Miss Ida Markman and two brothers, Rev. O. L. Markman, superintendent of the Olney district M. E. church, and F. H. Markman, assistant principal and teacher of physical science in the Olney Township High School.

No death in recent years in Olney has caused greater sadness than has the passing of Miss Markman. The entire community is saddened and the grief stricken family have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their bereavement.
